the mass murders at sandy hook elementary school in connecticut, we have been looking at new information on gun sales year in maryland. barry simms as the latest numbers, and there is a noticeable increase? >> we have contacted maryland state police on the purchase of gun applications and it does appear that those numbers are on the rice. the bushmaster rifle that adam lanza used in the newtown, connecticut killings was legally owned by his mother. he shot her four times in the head before going to sandy hook elementary school and killing 20 children and six female educators. calls for increased school safety, and at the same time, gun sales are on the increase. in november, there were more than 7200 gun purchase applications filed peeping >> we are projecting that we're looking at over 8200 barack applications being processed. >> more than 46,000 applications were processed. at the end of 2012, state police project 62,000 applications will be handled. state troopers will not speculate on why. some reasons are apparent -- the holiday season, some lawmakers proposing changes to gun laws.

the highest favorable job rating ever found in any governor of new jersey after his handling of sandy. >> did that natural disaster and the reaction of governor christie and the reaching out to the president -- did that help president obama? >> it certainly did. i do not think it was decisive. if the election had been held a week earlier and you look at the polls, and to was a lot closer. i think obama would have won, but it would not have been an electoral landslide. i think his 2.8% advantage in the popular vote probably would have been a pointless. people ask how important obama's reaction, handling of sandy was, 9% said it was the most important issue. i think 18% said it was one of the most important issues. a very high number. if you look at the trajectory of the polls, it clearly had an effect, but i do not think it was a decisive effect. i think the roots of the defeat of romney were a lot deeper than that. >> chris christie is a harbinger of the future in a sense. he is an imperfect messenger because he has a weight problem and a little bit too much of a mouth on him, but set into th

christmas with heavy hearts. it's been less than two weeks since the shooting at sandy hook elementary school claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults. a candlelight vigil was held all day long in newtown. 26 candles were lit monday at midnight. the volunteers spent three-hour shifts making sure those candles stayed burning. many people are turning to their faith right now to help them get through this very difficult time. >> we feel our hearts are broken in 26 little pieces, but it's the birth of jesus and we find strength in that, and so we're mourning, but we're also thinking of god at this time, that he'll give us the strength of his son. >> police officers from neighboring communities filled in for newtown police so all of them could have the holiday off and be with their families. >>> a newspaper outside of new york city is causing quite a controversy this morning. it published an interactive map showing the names and addresses of all handgun permit holders in new york's westchester and rockland counties. that map allows readers to zoom in on the red dots to indicate which

reversed their pledge to take up in emergency aid bill this week for states devastated by superstorm sandy. the move potentially leaves the $60 billion aid package to die at the end of the legislative session on thursday. the house was expected to consider the bill today, but dropped it following lengthy talks on the fiscal cliff. the decision drew harsh condemnation from both sides of the aisle. republican congressmember michael grimm of staten island, one of the areas hardest hit by city, said -- democratic congressmember jerry nadler of new york city blasted his colleagues for failing to take urgent action. >> hurricane sandy struck on october 29. nine weeks ago. it is unprecedented that it takes so long. i can understand -- i would not sympathize -- but i can understand with members to my said the amount requested is too much, we should change it, debate it. fine. but to ignore it? to ignore the plight of millions of american citizens? unprecedented, disgusting, unworthy of the leadership of this house. they should reconsider or hang their heads in shame, mr. speaker. >> president obam

where's the help for sandy. sandy relief was not included in this at this point. there is a possibility it can be tagged on in the house later. one other important thing to keep in mind is the sequester. the president wanted to kick the can down the street for a year, but at the end what they decided was that they would put it off for two months. that is going to be a looming debate they're going to have in two months. also the debt ceiling, technically we ran out of money at midnight but treasury secretary tim geithner figured a way to fin nay -- finnagle the finances where we can run the government through the end of february or early march on the money they've got. debt ceiling or sequester, two more fights if the republicans want to have. >> inheritance tax goes up for people who have over $5 million. the doctors fix will continue for another year. doctors will be taking medicare patients for at least 365 more days. unemployment insurance remains at a year. >> one thing we need to make sure you understand about all these things we're talking about, these are things that the senate a
